ASUS Fonepad

The Fonepad is the latest connected device from ASUS, combining a mobile phone and 7in tablet, meaning one less thing to carry around when you're out and about.

In addition to 802.11n Wi-Fi, providing fast internet whenever you're in range of a hotspot, the MicroSIM slot lets you slip in a SIM card so you can get online anywhere you can get a phone signal.

As well as letting you tap into fast mobile data while on the move, the Fonepad can double as a full handset, so you can make and receive calls either on the tablet itself or via a Bluetooth headset.

It's the first 7in device to be powered by Intel's new Lexington processor. The 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 chip provides plenty of power for the Jellybean 4.1 release of Google's mobile operating system.

The new processor not only provides a significant speed boost, but its low power consumption allows for up to 9 hours of continuous use.

It's available in a number of configurations, with up to 32GB of internal storage on offer. This can be further expanded thanks to the MicroSD slot, cleverly hidden beneath the top panel so it doesn't ruin the sleek lines. You can choose either a Champagne Gold or Titanium Grey finish, providing further scope for individual personalisation.

The high definition IPS panel is capable of vivid graphics and an increased colour range, along with a wide 178 degree viewing angle, so you can comfortably make out what's on screen no matter how you hold it.

The ASUS SonicMaster engineers have created a special speaker made out of metal, increasing the fidelity from such a small device. The bundled AudioWizard application makes the most of the enhanced soundstage, with preset modes for music, movies and gaming.

Accurate location information is a key part of mobile computing, and the Fonepad not only features standard GPS functionality but it can use Glonass location data as well, which when used together provides faster, more accurate information especially in built up urban locations or while travelling in a moving vehicle.

The Fonepad takes the best a 7in tablet has to offer and combines it with the mobile communication functionality that comes as standard in a phone, but at an affordable price tag.
